Merge PDF files

Bring a contract, a cover letter and a few photographed receipts together in one file, in the order they should be read. Every row shows what the file is, so a wrong one is easy to spot.

Add PDF files and images (JPG, PNG, HEIC and more) to combine into one PDF.

or drop files here

Your PDF is handled inside this browser tab and is never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Press ‘Choose files’, or drop PDFs and pictures onto the page. ‘Add more’ brings in further files at any point.
  2. Arrange the rows. The top row comes first in the result: drag a row by its handle, or use ‘Sort by name’ and ‘Reverse order’ for a quick fix.
  3. Take out anything that doesn't belong with the × at the end of its row. A file you added twice is tagged ‘Already in the list’.
  4. Press ‘Merge PDF’. A strip of page thumbnails appears, so you can check the sequence.
  5. Press ‘Download’ to get merged.pdf, or use ‘Print’, ‘Edit while viewing’ or ‘Organize pages’ to keep working on the new file elsewhere.

What it does

  • Rows that tell you what is what

Each row shows a thumbnail of the first page, a tag for the file type, the page count (or the pixel size of a picture) and the file size. The number at the left is the file's position in the result.

  • Reorder by mouse, touch or keyboard

Drag a row with the mouse, drag its handle on a touch screen, or tab to a handle and use the arrow keys. ‘Sort by name’ reads digits as numbers, so scan2 comes before scan10, and ‘Reverse order’ rescues a stack that was scanned back to front.

  • Photos become pages

JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC pictures can sit between PDFs. Each one gets a page of its own that keeps the picture's proportions and never grows beyond an A4 sheet, and a photo shot sideways is turned upright.

  • One bad file does not stop the rest

A file that cannot be read (damaged, locked with a password, or not a PDF or picture) gets a note on its row, and the merge carries on without it. The status line counts how many files were skipped.

  • Check it, then keep going

The result comes with numbered page thumbnails (the first 300 for a long file). Download it, or send it on to the PDF viewer for printing, to Edit PDF, or to Organize PDF.

Good to know

Most merges are paperwork. A rental application wants an ID copy, pay stubs and a reference letter; an expense claim has invoices as PDFs and receipts as phone photos; twelve monthly statements are easier to keep as one file. Because pictures are accepted next to PDFs, nothing has to be converted first.

Pages are copied across as they are, with their own size, rotation and links. What belongs to a document as a whole stays behind: bookmarks, and the fillable behavior of form fields, although anything already typed into a field remains visible on the page. If a form's answers need to travel, fill it in before you merge.

Pictures are treated a little differently. An upright JPG or PNG that is at most 4,000 pixels on its long side goes in without any loss. WebP, HEIC and other formats, sideways phone photos and very large pictures are redrawn as a JPEG at 92% quality, shrunk if needed until the longest side is 4,000 pixels, with transparent areas turned white. A merged file is about as large as its parts together, so use Compress PDF if it has to fit through an email limit.

Questions and answers

How do I combine several PDFs into one file?

Add all of them, drag the rows into reading order and press ‘Merge PDF’. The result downloads as merged.pdf and your original files are not changed. If a page still ends up in the wrong place, ‘Organize pages’ lets you move single pages afterwards.

Can I put photos and PDFs in the same file?

Yes. Pictures in JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and similar formats can sit anywhere among the PDFs, each as one page. A phone photo that was taken sideways is turned upright.

Why was one of my files left out?

A file that is damaged, password-protected, or neither a PDF nor a picture is marked on its row and skipped. For a locked PDF, remove the password with Unlock PDF, add the file again and merge.

Do bookmarks, links and form fields survive a merge?

Links and page content do. Bookmarks are not carried over, and form fields are not kept as fillable fields, although whatever was typed into them stays visible.

Is there a limit on how many files I can merge?

The tool sets no cap on the number of files or their combined size. What limits a big batch is memory: on a phone that struggles, merge in two or three rounds, or use a computer.

Is it safe to merge private documents here?

Your browser reads and joins the files on your own device, and the merged PDF is created there too. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no account or watermark.
