The short version

utilopdf has no way to see your documents. Every tool runs inside your browser, there is no account to sign in to, and no advertising is shown at present. The only statistic the developer sees is a count of visits and page views, taken without cookies.

Following a PDF through a tool

Say you merge two invoices. Your browser reads both files from your device, the merging happens in the memory of that browser tab, and the merged file goes back to your device when you press ‘Download’. No step involves sending the invoices to the site, so the developer cannot read, receive or keep them.

Passwords follow the same path. One you type into Protect PDF or Unlock PDF is used inside your browser only. The developer never sees it, so a forgotten password cannot be recovered for you.

What stays in your browser, and for how long

A copy of the file you choose, on the start page or inside a tool, is parked in IndexedDB, a storage area that belongs to this site and sits on your device. It lets the next tool open the same file without you choosing it again. The copy is deleted after two hours, or sooner when you press the × beside it on the start page or ‘Clear working file’ inside a tool. The area holds at most 600 MB.

Local storage keeps a few preferences: the light or dark theme, your language, and the last settings of some tools, for example the zoom of the PDF viewer, the languages selected in PDF OCR or the wording of a watermark.

Text recognition needs language data. It is fetched from this site the first time OCR runs, and your browser keeps it so later runs start faster.

Nothing in this section is transmitted to the developer. Clear the site's data from your browser's settings and every item above is gone.

What the site learns about visits

Cloudflare Web Analytics gives the developer a count of visits and of the pages they were for. Its script sets no cookies and writes nothing to your device, and the figures cannot be traced back to you.

Who delivers the pages

The pages come from Cloudflare's network. To send them and to turn away attacks, Cloudflare processes technical details of each request, such as the IP address it came from.

Advertising

utilopdf shows no ads today. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated before the first ad is shown.
