PDF to JPG

Save a page of a lease, a form or a report as a picture you can attach, post or print. You choose the format, the resolution and the pages; each page becomes a separate image.

Your PDF is handled inside this browser tab and is never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Press ‘Choose a file’ and select the PDF, or drag it onto the page. Beside the file name you will see how many pages it has and how large it is.
  2. Decide the ‘Image format’: JPG keeps files small, PNG keeps text and thin lines sharp.
  3. Set the ‘Resolution’. ‘150 DPI, standard’ suits screens and slides; ‘300 DPI, sharp’ is for print and small type.
  4. To skip pages you do not need, change ‘Pages’ to ‘Page range’ and enter numbers such as 2, 4-6.
  5. Press ‘Convert to images’, and the status line counts the pages as it draws each one.
  6. A single image is saved with ‘Download’. For several pages, ‘Download all (ZIP)’ bundles them, and the preview list under the button has a link per page if you want just one.

What it does

  • A size for every use

At 72 DPI each PDF point becomes one pixel, so a US Letter page is about half a megapixel. 150 DPI gives about 2 megapixels, plenty for slides and screens. 300 DPI gives about 8.4 megapixels, the one to pick for print.

  • JPG at 90%, or lossless PNG

JPG is saved at 90% quality for compact files. PNG keeps every pixel, which suits typed pages, forms and thin table lines, with bigger files as the price.

  • Only the pages you need

Convert everything or enter a list such as 2, 4-6. Leave the end open, as in 5-, to run to the last page. A mistyped number brings up a message with the PDF's real page count.

  • Numbered like the pages

Each file takes the PDF's name, then -page- and the page number, with enough leading zeros for the longest number: contract-page-07.jpg in a 12-page file. The ZIP is named after the PDF as well.

  • Scans and rotated pages

A scanned PDF needs no recognition here, because each page is drawn as it looks. A page rotated inside the PDF comes out the way a viewer shows it. Everything is drawn on white, so there are no transparent areas.

  • Drawn on your device

Pages are drawn, and the JPG or PNG is encoded, inside your browser. The PDF is not uploaded, and it is not altered.

Good to know

Think of the three resolutions as viewing distances. At 72 DPI a page is a thumbnail-sized proof, enough to judge a layout in a chat. At 150 DPI body text reads comfortably on a monitor or in a slide. At 300 DPI the image holds what a printer needs, and small print, stamps and signatures stay legible when you zoom in. Each doubling of DPI quadruples the pixels, so file size climbs quickly.

Choose the format by the page. A scan or a page full of photographs suits JPG. A typed page, a form, a chart or a table is better as PNG, because JPG can leave faint speckles around thin lines and letters. Neither format keeps transparency. A very large sheet, such as an A3 plan at 300 DPI, would pass 16 million pixels, so it is drawn a little smaller to stay within what browsers can hold.

What you get is a set of pictures: their text cannot be selected, searched or copied. To keep pages as a PDF, use Split PDF. To get the text, use PDF to Text. To rebuild a PDF from pictures, use JPG to PDF. If the PDF has a password, the tool stops with a message, and Unlock PDF removes the password first.

Questions and answers

How do I turn the first page of a PDF into a cover image?

Choose ‘Page range’, enter 1 and press ‘Convert to images’. You get one image, saved with ‘Download’, so no ZIP is involved.

When do I need 300 DPI instead of 150?

150 DPI suits slides, chat messages and reading on a screen. Go to 300 DPI for printing at full size, or when fine print must stay readable. The image then has four times as many pixels, and the file grows to match.

Why do the thin lines in my tables look rough as JPG?

JPG compression softens sharp edges. Save the page as PNG, or raise the resolution to 300 DPI, and thin lines and small letters stay clean.

Can I use the images in a Word document or a slide?

Yes. JPG and PNG files insert into Word, PowerPoint and most other programs. The page arrives as a picture, though, so its text cannot be edited. PDF to Word and PDF to PowerPoint keep editable text.

How large will the image files be?

That depends on the resolution, the format and what is on the page. A PNG of a page with photographs can be several times the size of the same page as a JPG. Start at 150 DPI and compare.

Why does a huge page come out below the resolution I picked?

To keep each image under about 16 million pixels, the tool lowers the resolution of very large pages, such as an A3 sheet at 300 DPI. Choose 150 DPI for sheets that size.
